Neuchatel, the French-speaking capital of the Swiss canton of Neuchatel, is located on the northern shore of Lake Neuchatel. Its medieval old town extends below Neuchâtel Castle, whose construction was begun in the 12th century.
The university town has about 45,000 inhabitants and is located on the largest lake in Switzerland. The canton of Neuchâtel is known for its extensive vineyards, the Jura hills and La Brévine, the coldest place in Switzerland (the lowest temperature measured here was 41.8 degrees).
To learn more about Neuchâtel and other areas, a visit to the Museum of Art and History (Palais des Beaux-Arts) is worthwhile. Among other things, the collection of automata of the watchmaker Jacquet-Droz is exhibited here. Also worth a visit is the Laténium, the largest archaeological museum in Switzerland, with a focus on finds from the La Tène period.
