Bellinzona is the second largest city in Ticino after Lugano and has over 44,000 inhabitants. The inhabitants are called Bellenzer, Italian Bellinzonesi.
The most striking feature of the Ticino capital is the mighty fortress complex consisting of three of the best preserved medieval castles in Switzerland. The “Tre Castelli” are considered the landmarks of Bellinzona and are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From the three castles you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city as well as over the surrounding mountains all the way to Lake Maggiore. In the alleys of the old town you will find impressive patrician houses and beautiful churches. Every Saturday a large weekly market takes place here.
