Locarno is an Italian-speaking town in the south of Switzerland. It is located on Lake Maggiore and is known for its sunny climate and is said to be the warmest city in Switzerland. Locarno is the third largest city in the canton of Ticino after Lugano and Bellinzona.
In the old town is the Castello Visconteo, founded in the 12th century, with the Museo Civico, a museum of urban history with finds from Roman times. Particularly famous in Locarno is the Piazza Grande, where the annual film festival is held.
Above Locarno in Orselina is the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso, whose foundation is said to go back to an apparition of the Virgin Mary. It is the main attraction of Locarno with a fantastic view of the city, the lake and the mountains. It can be easily reached by cable car.
