Biel/Bienne is a city of the canton of Bern. It is located on the shores of Lake Biel and has a population of about 56,000, ranking 10th among the largest cities in Switzerland. The second largest city in the canton after the capital Bern, it is the largest bilingual city in Switzerland.
Biel is the economic center for Seeland as well as for the Bernese Jura and some parts of the nearby canton of Solothurn. The city is the most important center of the watch industry in Switzerland, ahead of Le Locle, Grenchen and La Chaux-de-Fonds. Due to the headquarters of the Swatch Group and the production plant of Rolex (watch movements are manufactured here), Biel is called the watch world metropolis. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH also has its headquarters in the city.
Many expected Biel to be more of an industrial city. These should pay a visit to the excellently preserved medieval old town. The surrounding area is also worth a visit and offers the possibility for beautiful walks and breathtaking views of the nearby lake.
