Fribourg – one of the largest medieval cities in Switzerland – is, along with Biel/Bienne, a bilingual city, with French-speaking citizens in the majority at over 64% compared to German-speaking citizens at 21%. When the city was founded in the 12th century, it was only German-speaking. Later, more and more workers were needed from the French-speaking surrounding countryside, so that the German-speaking citizens found themselves in a minority from the 18th century onwards.
There is a lot to see here, such as one of the 11 historic fountains from different centuries or the “Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle”, whose works are housed in a former tram depot.
The most impressive is probably the Fribourg Cathedral with its beautiful stained glass windows and the 74-metre-high tower, from which you have an incomparable panoramic view.
